Sinusitis problems (nasal irrigation)
Pulsating saline irrigation is indicated as a one time treatment for sinusitis problems, or continuous treatment depending on the circumstances. It is used as part of combined therapy in all kinds of rhinitis and/or sinusitis problems, greatly improving nasal congestion and obstruction caused by inflammation. Since it is a non-pharmacological treatment, it is particularly useful in chronic inflammatory conditions such as chronic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis problems, polypoid rhinitis, and atrophic rhinitis and also in the treatment of chronic cough associated with postnasal drip.

When the irrigation for sinusitis problems is performed before the use of nasal applications, it complements and facilitates their normal action. Moreover, antibiotics and/or mucolytics can be added to the sinusitis problems irrigation fluid when necessary. Pulsating saline irrigation is highly effective at eliminating sinusitis problems by cleaning the nostrils after nasosinusal endoscopic surgery, thus clearing away scabs and blood clots and preventing the formation of adherences. This sinusitis problems system can also be used regularly for personal hygiene to prevent rhinosinusitis in susceptible patients with thick secretions (cystic fibrosis) or in persons with sinusitis problems who live and work in environments which can impair the cilia function such as organic pollution (mills, saw-mills), inorganic pollution (quarries, mines), irritants (paints, varnishes), urban pollution (diesel). It can also be used to improve the function of the Eustachian tube and to prevent compensation problems of the ears during diving or in airplanes. It is recommended to perform the washes for prevention of sinusitis problems a few weeks before carrying out any of these activities. It has been demonstrated that regular nasal irrigation prevents the common cold, and it could, therefore, be recommendable for persons susceptible to sinusitis problems.
The only counter-indication of saline pulsating irrigation for sinusitis problems is complete nasal obstruction; otherwise, the irrigation fluid for treating sinusitis problems, which enters the sinuses, flows out in small unnoticeable quantities, minutes afterwards, helped by movement of the head. Occasionally, when treating for sinusitis problems, the amount of expelled fluid coming out at one particular moment may be sufficient enough to be noticeable. This is normal when treating for sinusitis problems, and is evidence that the liquid is draining back out. Some people who perform the irrigation as a sinusitis problems treatment before going to bed may have discomfort in the frontal sinuses the following day. This discomfort does not appear if the sinusitis problems irrigation is performed in the morning after getting up since the upright posture favors frontal drainage. During the first few days of use for sinusitis problems, some patients with sinusitis problems may notice a mild sinusal pain accompanied by an abundant expulsion of purulent mucous which usually resolves spontaneously in the following few days.
In contrast to traditional nasal sinusitis problems irrigation systems (syringes, rubber bulbs), pulsating saline irrigation is performed under controlled pressure with the head bent forwards (see figure). This prevents the sinusitis problems secretions from being displaced towards the middle ear and, therefore, greatly reduces the risk of otitis. Furthermore, as the mucociliary clearance increases, the function of the Eustachian tube improves which in turn facilitates ventilation of the middle ear.
Nasal irrigation for sinusitis problems with the Grossan and WaterPik is known by many experts throughout the world and is used in the most renowned health care centers of the US for treatment of sinusitis problems. This method has been in use over 20 years in treating sinusitis problems, and more than 500,000 systems are being used by enthusiastic patients who rely on it, and reflect its total safety and efficacy. As a result, a great many specialists recommend its use in different medical publications where its sinusitis problems, therapeutic treatment properties are emphasized.
Irrigation for treatment of sinusitis problems with the Grossan system is easy to use and, since it uses warm water, is actually pleasant rather than disagreeable. It is very simple to treat sinusitis problems because it merely requires making up the irrigation solution by adding a spoonful of SinuSal salt, or table salt to the WaterPik receptacle, dissolving this with warm tap water and connecting up the system. During the irrigation for treating sinusitis problems, the head should be in a natural position, bent forwards slightly. The expelled liquid comes out through the opposite nostril and falls directly into the washbasin. The entire sinusitis problems treatment process lasts for 3-4 minutes. Any child from 4-5 years old can use the Grossan System by himself.
Irrigation with the Grossan sinusitis problems treatment system is economical because after buying the device (WaterPik and Grossan tip) it can be used to perform an unlimited number of washes with practically no additional cost (only that of the SinuSal), or table salt. And, the Grossan tips can be changed or exchanged for the WaterPik mouth adapters and, therefore, just one device can be used by several members of the family in the treatment of sinusitis problems.
