Ringing in the Ears

Ringing in Ears
Tinnitus is "ringing" in the ears and/or other noises that are perceived in the absence of any external noise source. It is estimated that approximately 20% of all Americans experience some degree of ringing in ears - tinnitus at one time or another.

Objective tinnitus is the rarest form of ringing in the ears, and it consists of a ringing in ears sound that may be audible to other people standing near the person suffering from the ringing in the ears. Ringing in the ears and ringing in ears are usually caused by vascular diseases or anomalies, repetitive muscle contractions, or inner ear structural defects. The ringing in ear sounds heard by the sufferer are generally external to the auditory system. It is possible that benign causes, such as noise from the jaw joint, openings of the Eustachian tubes, or repetitive muscle contractions may be the cause of objective ear ringing tinnitus. Objective tinnitus - ringing in the ears can be an early sign of increased intracranial pressure and is often overshadowed by other neurologic abnormalities.

Subjective tinnitus is the more common form of ringing in the ears. This form of ringing in ears may occur anywhere in the auditory system and is much less understood, with the causes being many and open to debate. The ringing in the ear sounds heard by the sufferer may range from metallic ringing, buzzing, blowing, or roaring to a clanging, popping, or sporadic beating. This form of Tinnitus has also been characterized by ringing ear noises in the head which are not generated externally - including chirping, screeching, hissing, ringing, roaring, or pulsating types of ear ringing.

There is no known cure for tinnitus and ringing in ears. The ringing in the ears condition has recently emerged in the medical world as new treatment methods are being studied to help increase the chance of success in dealing with ringing in the ears. For the time being, many people with subjective tinnitus - ringing in the ears have been able to get relief by using various herb and mineral supplements.
